My high school report cards in visual arts!
I thought it would be interesting to show you some of my old report cards from the mid-90s. I had aptitude for art in highschool.I came first a couple of times and it always surprised me because I wasn’t even trying or thinking about grades. I simply sat quietly and did some art.
But I chose to do more nerdy subjects for the higher school certificate (HSC). Physics, chemistry, engineering science. Subjects like that. I wasn’t really creative or entrepreneurial back then, I was more career-oriented. I suppose I valued ‘stability’ more than ‘happiness’.
First off, I thought that being an artist was not a great way of making a reliable fixed income (and I wasn’t wrong). It wasn’t even a decision. I just thought that I could “always do art” in the future like.
But perhaps if someone has have told me that you can become an art director or something, then get into graphic design or whatever, I might have thought differently. I don’t know. Maybe not.
Anyway, after my HSC, I went on to study materials science at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). I don’t regret it for one moment.
But now it seems strange that I’ve come back to art, design and languages as my main interests.
