The Staedtler lumocolor glasochrom pencil.

The Staedtler lumocolor glasochrom pencil.

vandenhooven 26 July 2022

If you’re wondering what type of wax pencil I use in all my artworks, it’s none other than the Staedtler lumocolor glasochrom pencil (in black).

The reason is that many wax pencils are made for builders, not artists. So instead of sharpening them as you normally would, they come with this removable paper that spirals down as it unwraps. Trouble is, I press so hard, this doesn’t work for me. The tips always break. So I found Staedtler and I’ve stuck with them ever since.

I go through quite a lot of The Staedtler lumocolor glasochrom black pencils. Probably an average of almost one per artwork. What I do is, I have half a dozen or so ready to go so that I don’t have to stop quite so often and resharpen one pencil at a time. I sharpen them in groups/bunches. Why? Because it’s faster! They wear down so fast, they need sharpening all the time. So it’s hard to keep track of how many wax pencils I go through really.

I tried white in a few drawings, tried blue outlines elsewhere, and eventually settled on black outlines because black goes with everything.

van den hooven

Illustrative artist van den hooven has a distinct visual language characterised by confident lines, divergent colours and imbued with vibrant symbolism.

Intentionally cluttered, contradictory and complex—his compositions capture the chaos of the modern world, through deconstruction and rearrangement of the internal and external and the animate and inanimate.
