Update: my artwork process

Update: my artwork process

vandenhooven 9 June 2022

I’ve been quite inspired and motivated these past few weeks. And I think part of the reason is that I haven’t spent as much time on social media. Well none really.

I’ve had this idea for a long time, a few years in fact. It’s based on –or influenced by– those old icon paintings (iconography). I wanted to retain the tilted head look. So that is intentional. And instead of Mary looking at a creepy-looking little adult Jesus baby, I wanted her (or him) to be looking at a smart phone, and somewhat depressed about it.

I do think too much social media can make us depressed. We inevitably compare ourselves to others. And yet these people, these social media accounts are almost always an idealised digital version of themselves. They don’t show you all the struggles behind the successes. It’s very fake in reality.

So we’re totally addicted to our smart phones. And so I wanted this artwork to send a message to the world about it. Half of that message is in the title, and so I thought for some time about what to call these artworks. One will be called “modern icon”. And the other will be called “holy grail”.
