Cadmium red purple.
Yes you read right, cadmium purple. There is such a thing. By Old Holland. I was intrigued by the thought of this, so I bought it. And it is indeed rather nice.
I think this was the first colour that I have tried from the Old Holland range of paints. Old Holland has been around since 1664. Vincent Van Gogh used to use them.
I guess it’s PR108 that has been over-roasted. It’s not exactly ‘purple’ as such, more of a dark cherry red. Or a fine red wine. But darker.
I now tend to paint the dark corner (ventricle? No! It’s an atrium!) of my hearts this cadmium purple and the rest of the heart I now paint medium cadmium red. Before that I simply used to use dark cadmium red for the atrium and cadmium light red for the rest of the heart (left/right ventricles). I think there is more colour contrast this new way of doing it.
It’s quite close to perylene violet, but they are different, which is good because I’m not sure which one I’d rather give up. So I use them both. Why not?
