I don’t actually like the term pop art.

vandenhooven 2 August 2022

It’s true. For one thing, I don’t like the word ‘pop’. I never just ‘pop’ down to the shops. I never just ‘pop’ in somewhere.

I never thought of my art as being pop art. And I hate to admit this, but I despise Andy Warhol’s pop art with a burning passion. Not the person, because I never knew him. But the art. Because I don’t think what he has done –what he did– is all that ‘clever’.

Besides, what so appealing –what’s so special– about a can of beans or a can of soup or whatever? To me they are not that interesting, and I will never incorporate either of those into my art.

It was actually my art copywriter who pointed out to me that my art is part pop art, part illustrative art. Because I have taken many elements and objects from popular culture. Still, popular-culture-art sounds a bit long. I prefer the term “populism” (although my art is not political).
